The residency has seven core areas
1) Practice Management involves implementation and development of new disease management programs as well as evaluation and enhancement of our current programs. Securing compensation and marketing services are included. Current programs include: adult immunizations, diabetes, medication therapy management (MTM), and smoking cessation. Future programs that are of interest include heart failure, osteoporosis, pain management, HIV and anticoagulation.
2) Orientation to the various components of the residency is essential to setting up the resident for a successful year. You can expect orientation sessions from the company and university as well as training for disease management programs.
3) Direct Patient care involves: providing advanced patient care services in the community pharmacy setting, identifying and resolving drug therapy problems, documentation and patient monitoring through use of lab tests.
4) Staffing is a component of a successful Community Pharmacy Residency Program. When staffing in the store you will always be paired with a preceptor who will help develop your ability to: direct the work of pharmacy students, master workflow for pharmacist counseling at the out-window, safely and accurately prepare and dispense medications.
5) Project development is a requirement of the residency. The topic chosen is of interest to both the resident and SUPERVALU. The resident is required to present this project at the APhA Annual Meeting via a poster presentation and at the Regional Pharmacy Residency Conference via a podium presentation.
6) Teaching opportunities are available though university and company experiences. Activities include acting as lab facilitator, lecturing groups of pharmacy students, precepting students and teaching patients in both classroom and one-on-one sessions. This is an opportunity to develop teaching skills as well as to serve as a role model to future pharmacists in improve written and oral communication skills.
7) Central Management experiences are available in many areas of the company including but not limited to Operations, Managed Care, Training and Recruiting. Potential actives include:
- Operations - participation in monthly Pharmacy District Manager meetings, interaction with upper management, store audits, loss prevention and quality assurance.
- Systems - pharmacy software development and implementation
- Managed Care/Third Party - compensation for services, profitability evaluation and contracts
- Training and Recruiting - college events/career fairs, brochure development, development and presentation of continuing education
- Pharmacy Process Redesign/Robotics
