Tips for writing a Resume/Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Ensure that the resume/CV is neat and visually appealing:
- Choose a high quality paper in white or off-white
- Use a laser printer
- Avoid fonts that are difficult to read
- 12 point font is easiest to read; do not use smaller than 10 point font
- Do not use more than 2 different fonts on your resume
- Use bullets to aid organization, but be careful not to overuse them
- Grammar Hints
- Do not use personal pronouns
- For the most part, use short, simple phrases that begin with action verbs
- Check for grammar and spelling
- Have at least 2 people review your resume/CV - one for content, and one for writing mechanics and layout
- General Suggestions
- include permanent address and e-mail
- tailor the objective to the position and company
- keep it short and to the point
- include anticipated graduation date of current degree
- list multiple degrees/schools in reverse chronological order
- GPA is optional. Do not include if <3.0
- Include scale if not based on 4.0 scale
- Alternative: list academic honors/awards

- Describe duties in depth
- Describe projects, lectures, grants, studies completed
- Clerkships/Rotations
- List each rotation including location and duration.
- Presentations
- Publications
- Include dates, co-authors, and name of publication
- Organizations/Community service
- Participation in activities and positions held
- Full and complete name of the organization
- Certificates/Awards
- Recognition that demonstrates valuable traits and characteristics
Things to Avoid
- Listing your social security number
- Marital status
- Citizenship
- Age
- Intern license number
- Recreational activities or hobbies
- Previous pay rates
